Root Canals

What is a root canal?

To understand a root canal, it helps to think about the structure of your teeth. The outer surface of each tooth is a thin layer of hard white enamel. Directly beneath your enamel lies a layer of dentin, which is yellow in color.

Beneath your dentin is a chamber filled with a soft pulp. That pulp contains blood vessels, connective tissues, and nerves. Decay can allow bacteria to enter and infect a tooth, or trauma can prompt infection without visible tooth damage. If an infection occurs, the only way to address the issue is by removing that pulp.

A root canal is the process of removing infected pulp and restoring the structural integrity of your natural tooth. Once ranked among the most dreaded dental procedures, today’s root canals are completed with very little discomfort.

What are the steps involved in a root canal?

Medication keeps you comfortable throughout the procedure, although you’ll likely remain awake. Dr. Oghabian begins by cleaning and isolating the tooth from surrounding tissues. She then creates a very small opening in the crown of your tooth.

That allows her to gain access to the inner chamber, where she carefully removes all traces of pulp. Special tools called files help her clean and shape the chamber and roots.

Next, a special dental material is cemented inside the now-empty chamber to strengthen your tooth. She then closes the access hole with a temporary filling and puts a temporary crown in place.

She removes a small amount of tooth tissue from the exterior of your tooth to make room for the crown. Once your permanent crown arrives, you return to have it checked for fit and cemented into place. That completes the root canal process.

Does a root canal require special care?

In the period of time between root canal appointments, it’s critical to avoid placing excess strain on your temporary crown, as your tooth is not yet properly protected. Once the root canal is complete, however, your restoration will look and function like a natural tooth. Simply maintain a solid dental hygiene routine, including regular cleanings and exams.
